When it comes to super vegetables, mostly we think about green leafy vegetables or cruciferous vegetables and often underestimate green beans. But the truth is, green beans are highly nutritious and along with other health benefits, green beans are very good for cardiovascular health.

Green beans, also known as French beans, Runner beans and String beans belong to the genus Phaseolus vulgaris. All the beans including pinto beans, black beans, kidney beans and green beans are the part of Fabaceae family. Green beans are picked up in immature state and mostly eaten in fresh, including the pods. The fresh and young green beans are selected for their great taste and high nutritional values.

Green beans are extremely rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Manganese and Dietary fiber. They also contain very good amount of Potassium, Folic acid, Tryptophan, Iron, Magnesium, Vitamin B2, Copper and Vitamin B1. In addition, Calcium, Phosphorous, Protein and Omega -3 fatty acids can also be found in green beans. But the major advantage of green beans is they are great sources of both flavonoids and carotenoids. Carotenoids that green beans contain are- lutein, beta-carotene, violaxanthin, and neoxanthin. Flavonoids which are found in green beans are- quercetin, kaemferol, catechins, epicatechins, and procyanidins.

Green Beans and Cardiovascular Health:

Green beans are powerhouse of antioxidants. They are highly rich in Vitamin C, beta-carotene and antioxidant mineral manganese. Besides, all the carotenoids and flavonoids in green beans are known for their antioxidant properties. Green beans contain more antioxidant properties than any other beans in the same family. Because of the antioxidant properties green beans are great food for the heart. Antioxidants are known for cardiovascular benefits. They protect the heart from oxygen damage and improve the levels of blood fats. Young and fresh beans pods are excellent for cardiovascular health. Dietary fiber in green beans help to lower the cholesterol levels and significant amounts of potassium and magnesium present in these beans reduce and control the blood pressure levels. Alpha-linolenic acid, a type of omega 3 fatty acid, that presents in these beans make it more heart healthy food. ALA or α-linolenic acid is very helpful in preventing coronary heart disease. Alpha-linolenic acid-rich diet is good for reducing the chances of heart attack and also, help to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in people with high cholesterol.

Overall, green beans are great for the cardiovascular health. To get maximum health benefits it’s good idea to cook green beans whole and steam for five minutes. Overcooking them can reduce the amount of some nutrients especially Vitamin C.

Caution:Because of the presence of measurable amount of oxalate green beans can cause health problems to the people who are suffering from existing and untreated kidney or gallbladder problems.

Since losing weight is such a Fad these days with the sale of pills etc, that most of us know are useless, articles like this are great. Our miracle weight loss product is found in our grocery store, and can found in produce, meats, fish and poultry sections. Food for diets do not have to be expensive. Green beans are great with a bit of curry and fresh parsley added. Parsley gives them a mild sweet flavor without additional, useless, calories, along with plenty of vitamins. We need more articles on foods like this, which are inexpensive, healthy, and great for incorporating in a weight loss diet. Ooops, did I say diet? Well, I for one, and not running out for the new Fat Burner and waste my money. Give me healthy food please.
