Nuts are good for the overall health. Importance of nuts and seeds in our diet is also well known. Some nuts are especially very good for the cardiovascular health. Walnuts are one of those nuts. In fact, these are great for the heart. Therefore, one of the major health benefits of walnuts is its ability to keep the heart healthy. Basically, these are edible seeds of the tree of genus Juglans. Walnuts also belong to the tree nut family. Tree nut is a botanical food family which consists of pistachios, pine nuts, pecans, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts and walnuts.

Health benefits of walnuts cannot be underestimated. Although, like all nuts walnuts are also high in high in calorie but they can provide some great health benefits as well. So, it’s important to have these nuts in moderation and always be careful on caloric intake. What makes walnuts a great food for heart is there heart healthy monounsaturated fats content. Not only walnuts are excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids too. In addition, they are very good sources of manganese, copper and tryptophan as well. Walnuts contain variety of flavonoids and lots of phytonutrients. Combination of all of these nutrients makes walnuts a wonderful food for the heart.

MUFAs or heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids are very well known for keeping blood cholesterol balance. Monounsaturated fats lower the bad cholesterol levels and raise the good cholesterol levels. These fatty acids help to clear the arteries and lower the chances of developing coronary heart diseases. Omega 3 fatty acids are important for lowering the triglycerides levels in the bloodstream. Omega 3s are also helpful in reducing the growth of plaques in the arteries. Often Type 2 diabetes patients develop cardiovascular diseases. Regular consumption of walnuts lowers the risk of cardiovascular problems in Type 2 diabetes patients.

Regular consumption of walnuts increases the levels of gamma-tocopherol –which is chemical compounds that contains Vitamin E properties. Walnuts also increase levels of omega 3 fatty acids in red blood cells. Besides, they reduce blood cholesterol levels especially LDL cholesterol levels. All these aspects improve blood quality and decrease the chances of any heart problem. A protein named endothelins, narrow down the blood vessels and raises the blood pressure levels. Consumption of walnuts reduces the levels of endothelins and improves the health of the blood vessels. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of walnuts keep maintain proper blood composition, reduce inflammation and increases flexibility in the blood vessel walls. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is an omega 3 fatty acid- very much responsible for varieties of cardiovascular functions. Daily intake of four walnuts increases the levels of ALA in the blood.
